Hi Ben. I live in Co. Armagh, Northern Ireland, about 15 miles form Dromore (where you have found out that William Shanks and his wife were from), in a town called Lurgan. I am starting some research, so I’ll let you know if I come up with anything pertinent to your details.

Still looking for information on Robert Shanks married to Elizabeth Summerville. Robert from Ireland and don’t know where Elizabeth was from. Can’t find a thing on them. They were my grandmother’s grandparents. Any info would be helpful.

Could you put me in touch with Patricia Watson and others researching the Canadian line of the Shanks family. My grandmother was Madeline Gibson Shanks, which would make me a second cousin to Patricia.

Yes, according to Wikipedia, they would have been second cousins. (Though figuring it out is always like tying your brain in a knot! :))

William Shanks Sr. had sons Samuel, William Jr. and Robert who all bought land in Sunbury Counnty, NB Canada. They came from County Down Ireland. I have copies of their wills and land grants. William Jr. was my grandfather’s grandfather and Robert was my Grandmother’s grandfather. Did that make my grandparents second cousins?

My mother’s people came from Ireland and setteled in Burton New Brunswick. Her great grandfather was Robert Married to elizabeth. They came from County Down

Annie: Whoops, I hadn’t realized that I never responded to your comment. Sorry about that. Yes, I’ve seen that William in the passenger lists. He might be Robert’s brother William, but he can’t be the uncle because the uncle never married. I need to start looking into him…

Holly: Small world. :) You might want to get in touch with Annie, since her Shanks line is from Canada as well. I don’t think mine connects with the Canadian line, at least not until they get back to Ireland. But I could be wrong. :)

Hi Ben,
I just happened on this Shanks research page. Just a few weeks ago we found a Shanks in our line– Elizabeth Shanks, born in Nova Scotia about 1795 and she died in Maine about 1862. That’s interesting that yours were from Ireland. We don’t know much about Elizabeth yet. Just that she married my ggggrandpa, William Hart who supposedly changed his name from Roper to get out of serving in the royal navy, which makes finding his family a little more interesting ;)
This is neat that you do family history on here, what a good way to correspond with people :)
